Boston Public Library...more than just books!

So, there aren't many options of fun, free things to do on Mondays in Boston (I guess that people have to work at least one day a week). But, one thing I found was a free guided tour of the art and architecture of the Boston Public Library. Guided tours are offered Monday 2:30 pm, Tuesday 6 pm, Friday 11 am and Saturday 11 am (note that on Saturday, the tour is a limited one without the Sargent Gallery tour so it's not really worth it).

The art and architecture are amazing! People don't build libraries like this anymore. You enter in a vaulted entryway that has mosaic ceilings with famous names of authors incorporated in the patterns. The grand staircase has majestic lions guarding the upper levels and many paintings depicting classical themes and virtues such as knowledge and wisdom. The reading room is spacious and the Abbey room murals and Sargent gallery are a must see.

Another best kept secret is the courtyard. In the summer this is a great place to come to study, read, or write a letter. The fountain adds to the refreshing and relaxing ambiance.

If you are a Boston resident, the library is a wonderful resource. They have tons of books and will even order books for you if they don't have them. Their DVD collection is extensive. I recently rented "The Town" and even though I was 17 on the waiting list, it took less than a week for me to get it because they have about 10 copies. If you have some patience, it's a great way to save money on renting movies. The library also has free museum passes to the MFA, Aquarium, Museum of Science and several other museums. More passes are available in the fall/winter months.

Copley Square is also beautiful with the Trinity Cathedral and John Hancock Tower. I also found a street performer with a huge bubble wand. The sign I saw in the T pretty much sums up the day, "the best schedule is not having one!"
